Oceanside is a big South Shore hamlet — a long commercial strip on Long Beach Road, dense postwar grids, and canals and marshes running south to the Island Park bridges. Between the Oceanside LIRR station and Oceanside Park the housing shifts from 1950s and '60s Capes, splits, and high-ranches on the grid to 1920s and '30s homes on the older streets near Oceanside Road, with canal-front homes south of Atlantic Avenue toward Island Park in between — three different jobs for a lighting crew.

Here's what we've learned lighting Oceanside: canal blocks south of Atlantic Avenue get salt-rated hardware and a lit rear roofline. Canal homes have two weather fronts: the street side that's sheltered and the water side that isn't, and a display has to be planned for the second one. So we rig the water side with sealed, salt-rated hardware and usually light the rear roofline so the display shows from the canal, not just the curb.
